Domestic Networking

Networks are not just for business. Many homes or student flats with 2 or more computers can benefit from a small, simple network.

Benefits

File Sharing

Large and small files can be quickly and easily shared between computers, no more saving files to floppy discs to transfer files. Access to certain files may be restricted for security if required.

Printer/peripheral sharing

Expensive peripherals such as printers and scanners can be used from more than one computer,

Internet Sharing

Special software allows multiple computers to connect to the Internet on one connection. One computer is set up to act as a server for your Local Area Network (LAN or home network) the other computers are then set up to access the Internet via this server. If you do not wish to connect though your LAN server, but wish a direct connection, then the software can be disabled, enabling you to connect with your own modem.

This software will work on any type of Internet connection, not just high speed access. If you have 2 or 3 computers, each just viewing normal pages, then the apparent speed will be nearly the same as if each computer had it's own connection. If, however, you wish to download files, or view multimedia pages that require more bandwidth, then performance will deteriorate noticeably.
