PC Performance

Just as your car or bike needs routine maintenance to keep it running properly, so does your PC.

Defragment the Hard Drive

One of the most important things to do is defragment the hard disc drive. When a computer saves files, it saves them in the first available space. This means that one file can be spread across the drive in multiple parts. As you can imagine, finding all these parts slows the computer down. A badly fragmented drive is like a dictionary with all the pages in the wrong order, it is possible to find the word you are looking for, but it just takes a lot longer.

The solution to this problem is a defragmentation program, this moves all the parts of files together, so the performance is enhanced.

Fragmentation of a hard drive is especially bad when there is little free space on a drive, it is best to leave 30% of your drive free. This is particularly important on the drive where your operating system (Microsoft Windows, for example) is installed.

Increase your RAM

Random Access Memory (RAM) is used by every program running on your computer, including the operating system. If you do not have enough RAM then this will seriously affect the performance of your PC.

Free up system resources

Every program you have running in the background on your computer slows it down. All the little icons in the system tray (on the taskbar beside the clock) are programs running in the background.

To increase the performance of your computer only run these programs when you need them, don't set them all to load at startup, this increases the time it takes for your computer to load up, and slows it down when it is running.

Tidy your desktop

Although the desktop of the computer may seem like a convenient place to store all your files, this can affect the performance of your computer. The computer has to remember the location of all the items on your desktop, and this takes up precious resources.

Large graphical wallpapers are nice to look at, but that file takes time to load up. Especially bad are the programs that change your desktop wallpaper every 30 minutes or so. As these are running in the background, they use up system resources, they also slow your computer down when changing pictures, as it has to uncompress then load another large graphic.

These steps are not suddenly going to double the speed of your computer, but they will help to keep it running at its best.
